Michael Hutt, LPC
Certified EFCT Therapist
I’ve been a therapist since 2010, but before that, I spent nearly 10 years as an electrical engineer. My career shift was driven by a passion for understanding how people’s life stories shape who they are. Throughout my therapy practice, I’ve had the privilege of working with clients from all walks of life. These days, I focus primarily on helping couples reconnect and supporting men who are looking to grow and build healthier relationships.
Couples Therapy
There are many models one can use to work with couples. I am a certified Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) and use this approach with my couples. Couples seek therapy for various reasons, but I see in all these reasons a need for a stronger emotional connection. I have been seeing couples since I was first licensed in 2010. Since then, I have enjoyed working with couples where one or both works in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) careers.
Couples Therapy with Engineers/STEM Careers
Trust between client and therapist is essential for therapy to be effective. As a former engineer, I am amazed at how much credibility my former career seems to provide for my STEM clients. These clients often value logic and problem-solving and tend to minimize or overlook emotions. They dedicate their lives to solving complex problems. These traits often serve them well professionally but can create challenges in romantic relationships. I understand this mindset and can help translate emotional experiences in a way that makes sense. I often act as a bridge between partners, helping each person better understand and respond to the other.
Counseling for Men's Issues
Men tend to be reluctant to engage in therapy. However, they tend to accomplish a lot once they see that therapy is rarely like it is portrayed in TV and movies. I enjoy working with men to help them experience more emotionally connected and satisfying lives. They often come to therapy at the prompting of a romantic partner. Many tell me that therapy changes benefit their relationship at home and help them at work. I have experience working with men on a variety of problems, including anger, stress management, and relationship counseling for one.
License and Education
I earned my bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and later completed my master’s in electrical engineering from Arizona State University. I worked for 10 years as an engineer doing semiconductor device modeling and basic circuit design before enrolling at Ottawa University, where I obtained a second master’s degree in counseling. I am a licensed professional counselor (LPC), a Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (LAMFT) in Arizona, and an approved supervisor with the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners.
